Theraphosa apophysis is widely regarded as the largest tarantula species by leg span — females have been documented exceeding 13 inches. It is distinguished from other Theraphosa by its distinctive pink-tinged foot pads and more golden-brown overall coloration. Among Theraphosa keepers, it is considered the most defensive of the three species — it kicks urticating hairs explosively and with remarkable accuracy. Eye protection and a dust mask are essential for all maintenance. The hairs cause intense, long-lasting skin and eye irritation. Unlike T. blondi and T. stirmi, T. apophysis does not require as high humidity and does well in slightly drier conditions — keep substrate moist but not saturated, and ensure strong cross-ventilation. Provide a large hide or burrow. Due to its extreme temperament, this species is best suited to very experienced keepers who understand the risks. A truly spectacular animal.
